In Search of a Lost Paradise
Few civilizations in history have left behind such a deep sense of longing. For eight centuries, Al-Andalus was a world like no other. Muslim, Christian and Jewish cultures lived side by side there, and philosophy, poetry, architecture and music flourished together. On the cover of this notebook, the stones of that lost paradise come together once again.
The Stories Hidden on the Cover
At the top of the composition stands the silhouette of an Andalusian fortress, with battlemented walls and a sturdy tower. It recalls the grand citadels perched on the hillsides of Córdoba, Granada and Seville. They were guardians and watchers, part history and part legend.
Just below, you can sense the Great Mosque of Córdoba, the Mezquita, famous for its slender columns and horseshoe arches. Few places on earth hold such graceful repetition. Its endless rows of arches draw you in as if you were stepping into a forest. Wandering among its columns, time seems to stand still.
The tower rising in the center is the Giralda, the symbol of Seville. Built first as a minaret and later turned into a cathedral bell tower, it is the perfect metaphor for Al-Andalus: layers of beauty added by many different hands.
The long arched structure running through the middle of the design is a Roman-Andalusian aqueduct or bridge. Perhaps it is Córdoba's famous Roman Bridge, the ancient crossing over the Guadalquivir River. For centuries, caravans, merchants and poets crossed it, and every stone holds a story.
At the bottom, a winding river and the small domed buildings along its banks whisper of everyday life in Al-Andalus: bathhouses, caravanserais, bazaars... These are the corners that show how time flowed through the narrow streets where people lived, loved and dreamed.
On the left and right, matching arched façades reflect classic Andalusian civic architecture. Behind them lie whitewashed walls, courtyards filled with orange trees and gardens with splashing fountains.
